This is one of the most frequently asked questions before embarking on an anti-corrosion treatment. The short answer: it depends on the stage of the rust.
The different stages of rust
Surface rust: slight oxidation on the surface, the metal is still solid. This is the best time to intervene.
Advanced rust: corrosion has penetrated deeply, the metal is starting to weaken. As much as possible must be removed before treatment.
Through-rust: the metal is perforated. In this case, protection alone is no longer sufficient; the part must be replaced.
The right method with GALVACYL®
For superficial to moderate rust:
1. Mechanically brush with a wire brush to remove loose rust
2. Degrease the surface
3. Apply GALVACYL® directly — the zinc will block residual oxidation
4. Drying in 15 to 30 minutes
GALVACYL® can be applied to lightly oxidized metal. It is not necessary to achieve perfectly bare metal — this is one of its great advantages over ordinary paint.
What not to do
Never apply directly to rust that is flaking off in sheets — it must be brushed off first. Otherwise, the protection will not hold.
In summary: yes, you can paint over light rust with GALVACYL®, provided the surface is properly prepared.
