Anti-corrosion treatment in coastal areas: why is it different?

18 June 2026
Traitement anticorrosion en zone côtière : pourquoi c'est différent ?

If you live less than 20 km from the sea, your metal structures age 2 to 5 times faster than in a continental environment. Here's why, and how to fix it.

The invisible enemy: sodium chloride

Sea air contains invisible airborne salt particles. These chlorides deposit on metal surfaces and drastically accelerate electrochemical corrosion. This is known as salt corrosion.

It is particularly aggressive because it attacks metal even in the absence of visible water — air humidity is sufficient.

The most affected areas by the sea

- Gates and fences exposed to sea winds
- Balcony and terrace railings facing the sea
- Metal frameworks of coastal constructions
- Unsheltered outdoor equipment

What this changes in terms of protection

In coastal areas, ordinary paint is not enough. Salt penetrates under the paint film and triggers corrosion from underneath — hence the typical blistering and flaking observed by the sea.

GALVACYL® zinc resists this mechanism because it does not act as a simple physical barrier. It electrochemically neutralizes salt attack, making it a particularly suitable solution for coastal environments.

Anticipated maintenance frequency

In coastal areas, an annual visual inspection is recommended. A touch-up every 5 years for direct exposure to sea spray, every 8 to 10 years for sheltered areas.
